MSE 201 Thermodynamic Foundations of Materials (4) Lecture, 3 hours; discussion, 1 hour. 
Prerequisite(s): graduate standing in Materials Science and Engineering or consent of instructor. 

Covers the laws of thermodynamics and fundamental equations for multi-component elastic solids, electromagnetic media, and equilibrium criteria. Describes applications to solution thermodynamics, point defects in solids, elastic effects, phase diagrams, transitions, and interfaces. Includes nucleation theory, kinetics (diffusion of heat, mass, and charge), and coupled flows.
